- Foundation /KS1 – Respecting Diversity

Friends and Feelings (school based) Issues dealing with friendship and emotions. Warm up activities i.e. circle time games, use visual aids & emotions puppets. Craft activity making ‘bee happy, friendly, kind…’ etc. |

Respecting Diversity (school based) Warm up activity using parachute. Using puppets and interactive media children explore diversity within the community regarding disability, multiculturalism, sectarianism, bullying etc. Children make their own puppets aound the theme of diversity. |

Comparing Diversity (Parkanaur) Develops the concept of diversity. Using characters from previous programmes children use the forest park to explore and compare diversity found in our environment. |
Programme Objectives:
- Children meet young people from another school and learn each other’s names and begin to share ideas around the issues.
- Children will have the opportunity to explore and discuss their own and others feelings and emotions.
- Children will explore and discuss similarities and differences between people
- Children will be aware of the concept of diversity and have an increased understanding of the variety of cultures who contribute to life in Northern Ireland.
- This project will also develop the links between schools beyond the teachers and pupils to the parents and others involved in school life.

- KS2 Programme – Respecting Diversity In Our Community

Our Identity (school based) Warm up activities i.e. introductions, spiders web, all change activity and human bingo. Powerpoint presentation of similarities and differences in our society. Children design an ‘Identity Shield’ incorporating friends, family, hobbies, interests, churches, schools. Children are given a net to make an individual ‘Identity Box’. |

Cultural Traditions (school based) This programme is specifically designed to bring children together in a safe and secure environment to participate in activities which explore our cultural traditions in a sensitive way. Warm up activities include parachute games. Children will examine issues like flags, symbols, emblems through a variety of individual and team activities. |

Religious Diversity (Parkanaur) Introductory interactive activity where children are given the opportunity to discuss faiths and religion in Northern Ireland. Children visit 4 main churches, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland, Methodist and Roman Catholic and complete observations worksheet. Follow up team activity regarding churches visit where children complete a booklet about local churches. |
Programme Objectives
- Children meet young people from another school and learn each other’s names and begin to share ideas around the issues.
- Children will develop skills, knowledge and confidence to understand their own identity, and to respect and understand the identity of others.
- Children will be given the opportunity to identify symbols linked to Northern Ireland and their origin.
- Children participating in the programme explore the differences and similarities between traditions, groups and different communities within Northern Ireland.
- Children will through the process have an increased understanding of the two main traditions and other significant cultures who contribute to life in Northern Ireland.
- This project will also develop the links between schools beyond the teachers and pupils to the parents and others involved in school life.

- KS2 Programme – Multiculturalism

Stereotyping, Prejudice and Discrimination (school based) Through a series of activities young people experience what it is like to feel discriminated against/towards and discuss this experience in a safe environment. Children use parachute activities, ‘Not up my street’ activity, the walking debate and practical craft activities and gain hands on experience with these issue |

Equality and Racism (school based) Speedwell is developing a series of activities around racism, rights and responsibilities and equality. Children will have the opportunity to participate in practical situations that deal with these issues. |
Programme Objectives
- Children meet young people from another school and learn each other’s names and begin to share ideas around the issues.
- Children learn to understand that differences and similarities between people arise from a number of factors, including cultural, ethnic/racial and religious diversity, gender and disability.
- Children become familiar with the idea of discrimination, stereotyping and prejudice through activities and begin to think about prejudice ideas they or others they know might hold about other religious/racial groups.
- Children explore, value and celebrate cultural difference and diversity
- Children recognise the similarities and differences between cultures in Northern Ireland, eg. food, clothes, symbols, celebrations
